Volkswagen Golf MK2

The Volkswagen Golf, named not for the sport, but the Gulf Stream (Golf being German for gulf), was the quintessential Hot Hatchback of the 1980s and early 1990s. When introduced, it spurred Volkswagens rivals to create other great European hatchbacks of the era, including the Ford XR3 and Peugeot 205 Rallye. The actual Golf Mk 2 was manufactured from 1983 to 1992, replacing the Mk 1; the Hot Wheels version (introduced for the 1990 Mainline series) was released only two years before the car it represented was replaced. Hot Wheels has produced the contemporary successors to the Golf, the MK4 Golf R32 released in the 2026 Car Culture 2-packs, the MK5 Volkswagen Golf GTI released in 2007 and the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 debuted in the 2016 Car Culture Premium series.
