The Maserati Tipo 61, commonly known as the Birdcage, is a racing sports car produced by Maserati from 1959 to 1961. Designed by Giulio Alfieri, the Tipo 61 was homologated for use in the 2- to 3-liter category in endurance racing. The car was nicknamed "Birdcage" due to its use of an intricate tubular space frame chassis containing about 200 chromoly steel tubes welded together and arranged in a triangular formation. The car was powered by a 2.9L Tipo 61 inline-4 mated to a 5-speed manual and most notably won the 1960 and 1961 6 Hours of Nürburgring. 17 chassis were produced.
